Interesting post. I think I agree with Phil as well.
This: 'the form of capitalism that turns people against each other like never before', seems to me the key point. Capitalism thrives on competition and we are constantly taught that to win or get to the top we have to step on and climb over as many other people as it takes to get there reg more…

I am referring to this:
Gill admitted he had no good reason for killing the animal. "I know perfectly well there is absolutely no excuse for this," he wrote. "There is no mitigation. Baboon isn't good to eat, unless you're a leopard. The feeble argument of culling and control is much the same as for foxes: a veil for naughty fun. I wa more…

Interesting, and the first quote is amazingly turgid...I've always argued that Marx laid out some ground work but it was always going to be unfinished business...it's like every thinker/teacher...their work gets taken over by people who do not fully grasp the ideas or theory and start building their own onto them, and in the end you get something c more…

if it's a draw we do nothing, let see how it pans out. WHo knows, NOT doing something could be the best thing to do, my flat mate does exactly that and he's happy... yet he does owe me 450 quid, the work shy free-loading dole fiend, it's with people like him that I whole-heartedly support capitalism. And public flogging. more…

Nice one, I am learning so much. It's refreshing to read this stuff that doesn't go on (like in that awesome example) about the bougouise, proletariat, evil capitalists and the joys of vegetarianism in one long convoluted stream of conciousness that is such a common feature of 'lefties'. I actually feel myself being persuaded, though I am resisti more…

I guess we can argue that Stalinism is not true communism as purported by Marx, same goes for Maoism etc etc
I think Marxism is not really viable anymore as its message no longer seems relevant to peoples lives. Everyone knows the famous 'Religion is the opium of the people' quote, I now personally believe that consumerism, easily available m more…

I would always insist that any form of society can exist - Capitalist or Socialist, as long as it is Democratic. If it is what the people want then so be it, but I do not believe in any sort of top down revolution or anything that comes from people in power (whether voted in or force themselves in) implemented on the rest. I do of course believe more…

As you say basically there are two categories in my opinion over the years most free thinkers fall into the socialist category.
Not all are red banner wavers but they have an inherent ability of recognising injustice.
Capitalists don't and if they do recognise it they tend to ignore it.
So yes there will always more…
